Artwork - bio

Melina Michael’s work entwines materiality with mentality, exploring the boundaries and the spaces in-between. Experimenting with crossing and merging photographic and sculptural mediums, extending to film and performative installations, are her areas of intrigue and inquiry.

Her ongoing interest in perception and perspective of ‘a subject’, to study and understand ‘point of view’ on multi-faceted levels, focuses on the motion of process and the continuity of learning through repetition, rhythm and receptivity. Human subjects are encouraged to lead her fragmented visual practice often interweaving sounds of lyricism and narrative, whereas still-life and sculptural pieces are formed, performed and produced by a combination of intuition and intent.

The complexity and fragility of Michael’s subjects at times collides quietly with an ethereal simplicity to create an aesthetic, capturing the sensitivities of a process in flux by encapsulating the artwork with emphasis on presentation for preservation to secure and enclose an otherwise hidden or often unnoticed undertaking.
